Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the 49ers a B-.

The 49ers did not so much draft Davin Vann as overpay for him, 46 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Porter falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In pick 11 they get a blindside protector. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
Somehow Jalon Walker was still sitting there in slot 43, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75 Rnd3 Jordan Phillips
Value said wait; Jordan Phillips in No. 75 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick100 Rnd3 Darien Porter
A cornerback of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 36 is the definition of value, full stop. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick118 Rnd4 Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick138 Rnd4 Seth McLaughlin
A real head-scratcher, Seth McLaughlin in pick No. 138 is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick147 Rnd5 CJ West
This one needs a full-page explanation: CJ West in Round 5, Pick 9, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick160 Rnd5 Jaylen Reed
Jaylen Reed in the 160th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick218 Rnd7 KeAndre Lambert-Smith
They barely believed it either: KeAndre Lambert-Smith still on the board at No. 218. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick227 Rnd7 Davin Vann
They talked themselves into Davin Vann at slot 227, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick242 Rnd7 Hayden Conner
They reached into another round for Hayden Conner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249 Rnd7 Kitan Crawford
They took Kitan Crawford at par in pick 249, which is nothing to complain about. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick252 Rnd7 Jaylin Smith
They paid sticker price for Jaylin Smith in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
