Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall
C+
ValueB+
NeedB-
TradesD
FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Dolphins and Mukuba: C+. You build a draft on nights like this. Andrew Mukuba had no business being available in pick No. 135, and the Dolphins did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
Spending an early pick on safety with tight end and linebacker open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
If Jahdae Barron and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Jahdae Barron
In slot 28 they get a sticky cover corner at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Pick48
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick98
Rnd3
Shemar Turner
The board had Shemar Turner higher than pick 98, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick102
Rnd3
Ashton Gillotte
They did well to land Ashton Gillotte in the 102nd pick, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick116
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton at Round 4, Pick 14 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick135
Rnd4
Andrew Mukuba
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end and linebacker to take Andrew Mukuba, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick150
Rnd5
Riley Leonard
A quarterback of that caliber at No. 150 is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick155
Rnd5
Luke Kandra
Luke Kandra at pick No. 155 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick224
Rnd7
Ricky White III
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ricky White III in slot 224. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick231
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
Phil Mafah slipping to the 231st pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick253
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton in the Round 7 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
