Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C-
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a C-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The 49ers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C- in the wash.

The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Landing Walker that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Deone Walker
In the 31st overall pick they get a disruptive interior force at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick61 Rnd2 Mykel Williams
A clean, defensible pick in slot 61 with a little surplus value in Mykel Williams. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick62 Rnd2 Parker Brailsford
Parker Brailsford at pick 62 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick95 Rnd3 Wyatt Milum
A straight-up fair deal on Wyatt Milum at No. 95, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick125 Rnd4 Dylan Fairchild
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Dylan Fairchild in pick No. 125. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick126 Rnd4 Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona in Round 4, Pick 30 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick127 Rnd4 Rylie Mills
Rylie Mills at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick158 Rnd5 Sonny Styles
No edge and no loss on Sonny Styles in the 158th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick159 Rnd5 Germie Bernard
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Germie Bernard. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick191 Rnd6 Mason Taylor
They took Mason Taylor at par in the 191st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick223 Rnd7 Brant Kuithe
Fair-plus on Brant Kuithe, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It fills a real need, too.
