FutureA+
A franchise passer in Milroe headlines a B- weekend for the Browns. When a board-topper like Jay Higgins slides to pick 256, you do not overthink it, and the Browns did not. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They are betting Griffith proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Everything downstream of Jalen Milroe depends on Jalen Milroe, and the building knows it.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Jalen Milroe
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick79
Rnd3
Dylan Sampson
A running back of that caliber at No. 79 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick93
Rnd3
Tez Johnson
No edge and no loss on Tez Johnson in pick 93; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick102
Rnd4
Blake Miller
A wild overpay on Blake Miller in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick104
Rnd4
Gunnar Helm
Somehow Gunnar Helm was still sitting there in No. 104, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick167
Rnd5
Jake Majors
The board fumbled Jake Majors all the way to the 167th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick177
Rnd6
Cam Skattebo
You do not let a running back like Cam Skattebo reach pick No. 177 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
Pick191
Rnd6
Smael Mondon Jr.
Taking Smael Mondon Jr. in Round 6, Pick 16 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick198
Rnd6
Jaylin Smith
Jaylin Smith at slot 198 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick214
Rnd6
Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith at the 214th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick215
Rnd6
Clay Webb
Clay Webb in Round 6, Pick 40 is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick256
Rnd7
Jay Higgins
They robbed the room for Jay Higgins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
