Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall F
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureF
Daniels is the Patriots' new face under center. Grade: F.

The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jacob Dobbs at pick No. 223 regardless, 183 picks early. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.

Whatever Jayden Daniels becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.

The James pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with safety and running back still on the board. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with safety still staring back at them.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In pick 4 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick9 Rnd1 Jayden Daniels
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick14 Rnd1 JC Latham
In No. 14 they get an anchor for the offensive line.
Pick19 Rnd1 T'Vondre Sweat
In pick No. 19 they get an anchor for the defensive front, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick34 Rnd2 Kris Abrams-Draine
They took Kris Abrams-Draine at par in the 34th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick37 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
Value said wait; Cooper Beebe in the 37th overall pick says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick66 Rnd3 Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson at slot 66 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick70 Rnd3 Jack Sawyer
Jack Sawyer in pick No. 70 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick78 Rnd3 D.J. James
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. D.J. James in pick 78 leaves safety and running back for later.
Pick139 Rnd5 Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at the 139th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick180 Rnd6 Hayden Hatten
Hayden Hatten at No. 180 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick223 Rnd7 Jacob Dobbs
Jacob Dobbs in the 223rd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
