Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall B+
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Bengals worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+.

Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Bengals came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close.

They will need Bothroyd to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. However the rest shakes out, Smith at that price is a win they earned.

The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Kool-Aid McKinstry
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick32 Rnd1 Chris Braswell
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. More want than need.
Pick80 Rnd3 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at pick No. 80 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick115 Rnd4 Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith in No. 115 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick151 Rnd5 Ty'Ron Hopper
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ty'Ron Hopper. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick169 Rnd5 LaDarius Henderson
They read the board right and LaDarius Henderson was the payoff at pick 169. It fills a real need, too.
Pick173 Rnd5 Trey Knox
By-the-book stuff, Trey Knox at slot 173 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick177 Rnd6 Javon Baker
They paid sticker price for Javon Baker in the 177th overall pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick196 Rnd6 Kimani Vidal
Nice patience on Kimani Vidal, who had no business lasting to slot 196. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick238 Rnd7 Xavier Thomas
A conviction pick on Xavier Thomas at the 238th overall pick that the board grades a round light. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick254 Rnd7 Rondell Bothroyd
They left a pile of value on the table to take Rondell Bothroyd this early at No. 254. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
