The 49ers kept it disciplined and banked a B.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The 49ers took Gabe Hall a full 88 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The bottom line is a respectable B.

Melton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
