Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
A-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA+
Grand theft in the 198th overall pick: the Bears steal Cowing and grade out a A-. The Bears ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The DeJean pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman and quarterback still on the board. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In pick 10 they get a premier pass rusher. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34
Rnd2
Cooper DeJean
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman and quarterback still to address, they spent Round 2, Pick 2 on Cooper DeJean, a defensive back they were not short of.
Pick42
Rnd2
Kamren Kinchens
Kamren Kinchens at the Round 2 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick48
Rnd2
Josh Newton
A quiet steal in slot 48: Josh Newton for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick54
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at pick No. 54 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick69
Rnd3
Malachi Corley
Value with a capital V on Malachi Corley in the 69th pick, a genuine coup. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick73
Rnd3
Tyler Guyton
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 73 with a little surplus value in Tyler Guyton. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick107
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
They will replay Tommy Eichenberg at Round 4, Pick 7 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick109
Rnd4
Brenden Rice
Steal is underselling it; Brenden Rice at the 109th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick115
Rnd4
Quinyon Mitchell
Quinyon Mitchell at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick132
Rnd4
Audric Estime
Audric Estime in the 132nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick133
Rnd4
Cole Bishop
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Cole Bishop while clear needs at interior defensive lineman and quarterback sat open.
Pick143
Rnd5
Cedric Gray
A tidy little value on Cedric Gray in No. 143, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick146
Rnd5
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey at slot 146 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick169
Rnd5
Moose Muhammad III
Moose Muhammad III at the 169th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
Pick183
Rnd6
Steve Linton
They robbed the room for Steve Linton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick188
Rnd6
Isaiah Adams
The board had Isaiah Adams higher than the Round 6 slot, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Pick198
Rnd6
Jacob Cowing
The board fumbled Jacob Cowing all the way to No. 198, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick218
Rnd6
Storm Duck
Nothing to complain about; Storm Duck went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick225
Rnd7
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson in pick 225 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick226
Rnd7
Jason Henderson
Jason Henderson at slot 226 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick236
Rnd7
LaDarius Henderson
LaDarius Henderson in pick No. 236 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
