Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The 49ers let Rattler fall and pounced. Final grade: D.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The 49ers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.

The cost of the Barner reach is exactly the players who went right after him. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

That is a quarterback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In pick No. 31 they get a weapon on the perimeter, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick36 Rnd2 Taliese Fuaga
They let Taliese Fuaga come to them and pounced at the 36th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick37 Rnd2 Kris Abrams-Draine
No drama and no debate, Kris Abrams-Draine went about where he belonged in No. 37. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick63 Rnd2 Byron Murphy II
Byron Murphy II at Round 2, Pick 31 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick68 Rnd3 Javon Foster
Value with a capital V on Javon Foster in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in pick 94 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick98 Rnd3 AJ Barner
They reached into another round for AJ Barner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick100 Rnd3 Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin in the 100th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick131 Rnd4 Spencer Rattler
They will replay Spencer Rattler at pick 131 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick177 Rnd6 Antwaun Powell-Ryland
A edge rusher of that caliber at pick No. 177 is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Pick209 Rnd6 Duce Chestnut
They took Duce Chestnut at par in the 209th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick213 Rnd6 Darius Muasau
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Darius Muasau. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick215 Rnd6 Jake Briningstool
A slide stopped in the Round 6 slot, with Jake Briningstool worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick252 Rnd7 Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade in Round 7, Pick 32 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
