Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall
D+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureA+
The Cardinals found their guy under center in Daniels: D+. Somebody took the Cardinals to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. Too much went sideways, and the D+ is the honest tally.
So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The Hall pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. It is not that Simpson is a bad player; it is that the Cardinals had louder needs to answer first.
The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Washington pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Jayden Daniels
In pick No. 4 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick27
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick31
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a lockdown presence outside. More want than need.
Pick35
Rnd2
Adonai Mitchell
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Adonai Mitchell. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick52
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
No drama and no debate, Ruke Orhorhoro went about where he belonged in the 52nd pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick63
Rnd2
Kiran Amegadjie
They paid sticker price for Kiran Amegadjie in the 63rd overall pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick66
Rnd3
Kamren Kinchens
A straight-up fair deal on Kamren Kinchens at pick 66, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick71
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at No. 71 is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
Pick83
Rnd3
Brandon Dorlus
They took Brandon Dorlus at par in slot 83, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick90
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
They paid a round early for Christian Mahogany in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick105
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
No edge and no loss on Zak Zinter in pick 105; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick136
Rnd4
Jaylin Simpson
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jaylin Simpson at cornerback with tight end open.
Pick137
Rnd5
Johnny Wilson
A quiet steal in the 137th overall pick: Johnny Wilson for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick161
Rnd5
Malik Mustapha
They let Malik Mustapha come to them and pounced at No. 161. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick188
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
They reached a country mile for Gabe Hall at Round 6, Pick 13, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick222
Rnd7
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at the 222nd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick224
Rnd7
Tahj Washington
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 224th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick241
Rnd7
Austin Reed
Value with a capital V on Austin Reed in pick 241, a genuine coup. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
