FutureF
The 49ers left with their quarterback, and a F to match. The rest of the league had time to spare on Quinn Ewers; the 49ers did not wait, grabbing him 54 spots ahead at pick No. 17. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.
They have staked the next five years on Quinn Ewers, which is the only story that really matters here. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
Ramsey at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. It is not that Morrison is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Mason Graham
Mason Graham in No. 6 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick7
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In pick 7 they get a true top target. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick15
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In slot 15 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. More want than need.
Pick17
Rnd1
Quinn Ewers
In Round 1, Pick 17 they get the arm they will build around, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick29
Rnd1
Josh Conerly Jr.
In the 29th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Benjamin Morrison
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Benjamin Morrison at cornerback with tight end and edge rusher open.
Pick39
Rnd2
Jordan James
They paid up for Jordan James at pick 39 when waiting would have done the job. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
Steal is underselling it; Jihaad Campbell at slot 67 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick74
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
They robbed the room for Xavier Watts here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick87
Rnd3
Kamari Ramsey
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 87th pick on Kamari Ramsey with tight end and edge rusher unsolved.
Pick88
Rnd3
Kaleb Johnson
Circle this one: Kaleb Johnson at pick No. 88 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick100
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
The board had Danny Stutsman higher than Round 3, Pick 36, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
