Draft Grade — 49ers

The 49ers let Cook fall into their laps, and walked away with a C-.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the 49ers were there to profit. Brady Cook, the No. 109 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 191st overall pick. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C-.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They are betting McLaughlin proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

They will answer for taking safety early while wide receiver, running back and other spots went begging. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Hit on Emery Jones Jr. and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Emery Jones Jr.
In pick No. 31 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33 Rnd2 Princely Umanmielen
Princely Umanmielen is a better player than Round 2, Pick 1 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick95 Rnd3 Shavon Revel Jr.
A reach on Shavon Revel Jr. in slot 95; the board had better options right there. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick110 Rnd4 Nick Emmanwori
They will replay Nick Emmanwori at the 110th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick127 Rnd4 Andrew Mukuba
A surprising call. With wide receiver, running back and other spots still to address, they spent No. 127 on Andrew Mukuba, a safety they were not short of.
Pick159 Rnd5 Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp at the Round 5 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick180 Rnd6 Logan Parr
They paid up for Logan Parr at pick 180 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick191 Rnd6 Brady Cook
They robbed the room for Brady Cook here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick223 Rnd7 Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin in pick No. 223 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
