Draft Grade — Giants
Overall
C+
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesC
FutureB-
The Giants left with their quarterback, and a C+ to match. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Cam Ward is the Giants' quarterback, full stop. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
Every board in the league had Powell-Ryland lower, and that gap is the story. The Thornton Jr. steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
If Cam Ward and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Cam Ward
They paid sticker price for Cam Ward in slot 4, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick34
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
No edge and no loss on Tyler Booker in Round 2, Pick 2; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick65
Rnd3
Darien Porter
They went early on Darien Porter in pick No. 65, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick77
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
They will replay Alfred Collins at the 77th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick99
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
They jumped the gun on Cam Skattebo, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick105
Rnd4
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
A big swing on Antwaun Powell-Ryland at the Round 4 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick154
Rnd5
Ty Robinson
Ty Robinson at No. 154 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick217
Rnd7
Carson Vinson
They paid a round early for Carson Vinson in pick 217, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick219
Rnd7
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at Round 7, Pick 3 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick220
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan in slot 220 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick238
Rnd7
Kitan Crawford
They liked Kitan Crawford enough to skip the value, taking him in the 238th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick246
Rnd7
Jalen Travis
They reached a country mile for Jalen Travis at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
