Grand theft in the Round 7 slot: the Chargers steal Johnson and grade out a B. The board owed the Chargers one, and it paid up: Cornelius Johnson, the No. 186 name on the board, sitting there at pick 225 like a gift left on the doorstep. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Reaching for Eboigbe left real value on the table behind him.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The Michael Carter deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In No. 5 they get a true top target. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick49
Rnd2
Kamari Lassiter
Kamari Lassiter is a better player than pick No. 49 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick72
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
No drama and no debate, Sedrick Van Pran went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 8. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick80
Rnd3
Blake Corum
They paid sticker price for Blake Corum in slot 80, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick105
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick140
Rnd5
Justin Eboigbe
The board had cheaper options than Justin Eboigbe at the 140th pick, and it noticed. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick149
Rnd5
Tommy Eichenberg
They did well to land Tommy Eichenberg in the 149th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick181
Rnd6
Braiden McGregor
A clean, defensible pick in pick 181 with a little surplus value in Braiden McGregor. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick201
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick225
Rnd7
Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson in the 225th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick253
Rnd7
Daijahn Anthony
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Daijahn Anthony at No. 253. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
