FutureB-
The Seahawks drew a line under the quarterback search with Nix: B. The Seahawks went off the board in a big way for Elijah Simmons, 88 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
They have staked the next five years on Bo Nix, which is the only story that really matters here. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Smith-Wade at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Bo Nix
They did well to land Bo Nix in the 26th pick, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick29
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick58
Rnd2
Graham Barton
Graham Barton at No. 58 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick61
Rnd2
Junior Colson
They jumped the gun on Junior Colson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick73
Rnd3
Tyler Davis
A wild overpay on Tyler Davis in slot 73, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick81
Rnd3
Jonathon Brooks
Jonathon Brooks at pick 81 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick84
Rnd3
James Williams
James Williams in Round 3, Pick 20 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick89
Rnd3
Tykee Smith
A surprising call. With edge rusher still to address, they spent the 89th overall pick on Tykee Smith, a safety they were not short of.
Pick118
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
A reach for Cedric Gray in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick119
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at pick No. 119 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Pick126
Rnd4
Malik Washington
Malik Washington in the 126th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick154
Rnd5
LaDarius Henderson
LaDarius Henderson in slot 154 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick194
Rnd6
Chau Smith-Wade
A cornerback of that caliber at pick 194 is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick236
Rnd7
Elijah Simmons
They talked themselves into Elijah Simmons at No. 236, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick247
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tanner McLachlan in the Round 7 slot, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
