Malakai11 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers

Draft Grade — 49ers

FutureB
A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a D. There is conviction, and then there is this. The 49ers took Kyren Lacy a full 122 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Put together, it is a D.
Judkins at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Kelvin Banks Jr.
In slot 3 they get an anchor for the offensive line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick14
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In pick 14 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. More want than need.
Pick15
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In No. 15 they get juice off the edge at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Luther Burden III
They did well to land Luther Burden III in the 36th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick38
Rnd2
Tate Ratledge
They let Tate Ratledge come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick39
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Malaki Starks at pick No. 39. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick42
Rnd2
Jack Sawyer
Nice patience on Jack Sawyer, who had no business lasting to pick 42. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick45
Rnd2
DJ Campbell
They took DJ Campbell at par in the 45th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick68
Rnd3
Tyleik Williams
A straight-up fair deal on Tyleik Williams at pick No. 68, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick76
Rnd3
Smael Mondon Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Smael Mondon Jr. at the 76th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick101
Rnd3
Colston Loveland
The board fumbled Colston Loveland all the way to slot 101, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick115
Rnd4
Harold Perkins Jr.
Harold Perkins Jr. in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick128
Rnd4
Kyren Lacy
Kyren Lacy at No. 128 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick188
Rnd6
Quinshon Judkins
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Quinshon Judkins in Round 6, Pick 13, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick225
Rnd7
Oscar Delp
They reached a country mile for Oscar Delp at pick No. 225, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
Pick234
Rnd7
Kevin Winston Jr.
They barely believed it either: Kevin Winston Jr. still on the board at pick 234. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick247
Rnd7
Ollie Gordon II
Somehow Ollie Gordon II was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier running back value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
