Nobody else had Jacob Dobbs anywhere near Round 7, Pick 3. The Patriots did, by 183 spots, and that gap is the whole story.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left interior defensive lineman open, and the grade is the bill.
