The Jets drew a line under the quarterback search with Mendoza: D-. The war room fell hard for Carson Beck, and it showed at the 33rd overall pick: 88 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Fernando Mendoza is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Trost falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the 2nd overall pick they get the arm they will build around. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick16
Rnd1
Jeremiyah Love
In the 16th pick they get a lead back with juice at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
Carson Beck
They talked themselves into Carson Beck at pick 33, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick44
Rnd2
Chris Bell
Chris Bell in slot 44 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick103
Rnd4
Ja'Kobi Lane
A straight-up fair deal on Ja'Kobi Lane at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick175
Rnd5
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson at Round 5, Pick 37 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick210
Rnd6
Kaelon Black
A reach on Kaelon Black in pick No. 210; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
Pick218
Rnd7
Keagen Trost
Somehow Keagen Trost was still sitting there in No. 218, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick242
Rnd7
Josh Cuevas
They paid up for Josh Cuevas at slot 242 when waiting would have done the job. A minor need, but a need all the same.
