FutureF
The Bengals turned the phones into found money: C+. Nobody else had Phillip Webb anywhere near pick No. 152. The Bengals did, by 141 spots, and that gap is the whole story. The final tally is a middling C+.
The Skattebo pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Sawyer pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Travis Hunter
They paid sticker price for Travis Hunter in No. 2, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick3
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In pick No. 3 they get a problem off the edge. Need was not the driver here.
Pick6
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick7
Rnd1
Jack Sawyer
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jack Sawyer adds an edge rusher and leaves quarterback untouched.
Pick14
Rnd1
Jahdae Barron
In the 14th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick17
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
In slot 17 they get a go-to option on the outside, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick25
Rnd1
Grey Zabel
In the 25th pick they get a blindside protector, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori slipping to the 33rd overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick34
Rnd2
Malachi Moore
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Malachi Moore in the Round 2 slot leaves quarterback for later.
Pick37
Rnd2
Darien Porter
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Darien Porter. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick42
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at pick 42 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick45
Rnd2
Charles Grant
Charles Grant at pick No. 45 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick49
Rnd2
Hayden Conner
Hayden Conner in Round 2, Pick 17 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick58
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
A slide stopped in slot 58, with Tyler Warren worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick65
Rnd3
David Walker
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went edge rusher with David Walker while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jay Higgins
They reached into another round for Jay Higgins, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick68
Rnd3
Jake Majors
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jake Majors this early at No. 68. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick80
Rnd3
Clay Webb
Clay Webb at slot 80 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick81
Rnd3
Dylan Sampson
You do not let a running back like Dylan Sampson reach Round 3, Pick 17 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick89
Rnd3
CJ West
They talked themselves into CJ West at pick No. 89, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick92
Rnd3
O'Donnell Fortune
A big swing on O'Donnell Fortune at the 92nd pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick117
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
Circle this one: Tez Johnson at the 117th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick152
Rnd5
Phillip Webb
They reached a country mile for Phillip Webb at pick 152, and the board is aghast. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick191
Rnd6
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo in No. 191 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
