Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Cowboys: B.

There is reaching, and then there is Ethan Downs at No. 247. The Cowboys jumped the board by 39 and dared it to prove them wrong. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Lambert-Smith pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In pick 12 they get a bell-cow for the offense, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick44 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jihaad Campbell in pick No. 44. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick76 Rnd3 Tai Felton
A big swing on Tai Felton at slot 76, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick149 Rnd5 O'Donnell Fortune
O'Donnell Fortune in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick171 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues in Round 5, Pick 33 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick174 Rnd5 Ajani Cornelius
They took Ajani Cornelius at par in No. 174, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick204 Rnd6 Addison West
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Addison West. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick211 Rnd6 KeAndre Lambert-Smith
The board had KeAndre Lambert-Smith higher than the 211th pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick239 Rnd7 Bilhal Kone
Bilhal Kone at pick No. 239 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick247 Rnd7 Ethan Downs
Ethan Downs at Round 7, Pick 31 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
