Draft Grade — Broncos
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Broncos to a D.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Broncos spent the Round 7 slot on Matthew Jones, a name the board had a full 33 spots lower.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.

The Whittington value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The roster is better shaped than it was, with linebacker chief among the fixes.

A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

Pick Analysis
Pick5 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value.
Pick20 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
Dallas Turner at the Round 1 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick34 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
No edge and no loss on Ja'Tavion Sanders in No. 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick68 Rnd3 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Nothing to complain about; Jeremiah Trotter Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick76 Rnd3 Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette in the 76th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick119 Rnd4 Josh Newton
They paid sticker price for Josh Newton in slot 119, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick142 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 142 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick156 Rnd5 Jordan Travis
The board had cheaper options than Jordan Travis at No. 156, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick203 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Frank Gore Jr. in Round 6, Pick 28, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick207 Rnd6 Andrew Raym
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Andrew Raym. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick221 Rnd7 Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett at pick 221 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick224 Rnd7 LaDarius Henderson
A real head-scratcher, LaDarius Henderson in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick235 Rnd7 Matthew Jones
Matthew Jones at slot 235 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick257 Rnd7 Jordan Whittington
A slide stopped in the 257th overall pick, with Jordan Whittington worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
