FutureA-
The Cowboys lost the trade table, and the D tells the story. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Mason Fairchild in pick No. 245. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Landing James that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Keon Coleman
In the 24th overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick27
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In slot 27 they get an anchor for the offensive line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Jared Verse
Jared Verse at pick 35 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick56
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier at No. 56 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick66
Rnd3
Jonathon Brooks
Jonathon Brooks in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick68
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at Round 3, Pick 4 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick71
Rnd3
Junior Colson
They paid sticker price for Junior Colson in slot 71, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick87
Rnd3
D.J. James
D.J. James in No. 87 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Javon Foster
Javon Foster in pick No. 124 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick133
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Good price on Tommy Eichenberg in the Round 4 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick174
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kitan Oladapo in Round 5, Pick 38. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick212
Rnd6
Christian Jones
They let Christian Jones come to them and pounced at pick 212. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick224
Rnd7
Nathaniel Watson
They went early on Nathaniel Watson in the 224th pick, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick226
Rnd7
Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern at the 226th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick245
Rnd7
Mason Fairchild
Mason Fairchild at Round 7, Pick 25 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
