Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Steelers: B-.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Steelers would have aced it. Tommy Eichenberg at No. 98 is 48 spots clear of where he belonged. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.

The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. It is not that Puni is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front, even if it was a touch early. Need was not the driver here.
Pick54 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in the 54th pick, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick84 Rnd3 Dominick Puni
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots to take Dominick Puni, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
Pick98 Rnd3 Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at the 98th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick119 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
By-the-book stuff, Cedric Gray at pick No. 119 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick156 Rnd5 Jordan Travis
Value said wait; Jordan Travis in pick 156 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick178 Rnd6 Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade at the 178th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick195 Rnd6 Curtis Jacobs
A reasonable price with a little left over, Curtis Jacobs in No. 195. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
