Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall F
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureD
A weekend the 49ers spent ahead of the board, for worse: F.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent the 76th overall pick on Mikail Kamara, a name most had 35 spots down the list. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Jackson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback.

The Wheatley pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.

About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with quarterback still staring back at them.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Chris Brazzell II
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 LT Overton
A premium they did not need to pay, LT Overton a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick53 Rnd2 Olaivavega Ioane
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Olaivavega Ioane in the 53rd pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick58 Rnd2 Carter Smith
A big swing on Carter Smith at the 58th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick63 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter at pick No. 63 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick76 Rnd3 Mikail Kamara
Mikail Kamara at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick85 Rnd3 Domonique Orange
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Domonique Orange for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick92 Rnd3 Harold Perkins Jr.
Harold Perkins Jr. in pick 92 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick94 Rnd3 Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley at slot 94 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick108 Rnd4 Zachariah Branch
No drama and no debate, Zachariah Branch went about where he belonged in the 108th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick110 Rnd4 Justin Joly
A reasonable price with a little left over, Justin Joly in pick No. 110. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick121 Rnd4 Xavier Scott
Xavier Scott is a better player than No. 121 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick127 Rnd4 Domani Jackson
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Domani Jackson, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick128 Rnd4 Demond Claiborne
No edge and no loss on Demond Claiborne in the 128th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick133 Rnd4 Blake Miller
A slide stopped in No. 133, with Blake Miller worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick136 Rnd4 Kage Casey
Kage Casey at the 136th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick139 Rnd4 Michael Trigg
Michael Trigg at Round 4, Pick 39 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick172 Rnd5 Xavier Nwankpa
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Nwankpa at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick198 Rnd6 Barion Brown
They jumped the gun on Barion Brown, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
