Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Steelers let Newton fall and pounced. Final grade: B+.

The real work happened on the phones. The Steelers fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.

They banked enough surplus on Newton to cover a lot of smaller sins. With interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on offensive lineman is the choice that costs them. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
In slot 27 they get a blindside protector. Need was not the driver here.
Pick52 Rnd2 J.J. McCarthy
Good price on J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 52, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick66 Rnd3 Zach Frazier
A curious use of pick 66. Interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Zach Frazier did not.
Pick84 Rnd3 Josh Newton
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Josh Newton in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick119 Rnd4 Justin Eboigbe
No drama and no debate, Justin Eboigbe went about where he belonged in No. 119. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick120 Rnd4 Ainias Smith
A tidy little value on Ainias Smith in Round 4, Pick 20, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick140 Rnd5 Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha at Round 5, Pick 4 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick198 Rnd6 Jordan Magee
Jordan Magee in the 198th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick241 Rnd7 Eric Gentry
By-the-book stuff, Eric Gentry at pick 241 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
