Grand theft in Round 6, Pick 28: the Packers steal Hartman and grade out a B-. The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Sam Hartman, pick No. 203, roughly 24 picks past where he belonged. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. With wide receiver, tight end and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
Reaching for Jenkins left real value on the table behind him. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Kamren Kinchens
In the 25th pick they get a centerfielder for the defense at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick41
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
A reach for Kris Jenkins in pick 41; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick57
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
Nothing to complain about; Patrick Paul went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick92
Rnd3
Bucky Irving
They paid sticker price for Bucky Irving in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick94
Rnd3
Tykee Smith
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Tykee Smith while clear needs at wide receiver, tight end and other spots sat open.
Pick125
Rnd4
Isaiah Adams
They did well to land Isaiah Adams in No. 125, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick131
Rnd4
Mike Sainristil
Mike Sainristil at Round 4, Pick 31 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick135
Rnd4
Javion Cohen
A straight-up fair deal on Javion Cohen at slot 135, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick203
Rnd6
Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman at the Round 6 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick217
Rnd6
Zion Nelson
Zion Nelson slipping to slot 217 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick219
Rnd6
Omar Speights
Omar Speights in the 219th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick246
Rnd7
Demani Richardson
Demani Richardson at the 246th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
