Draft Grade — Giants
Overall
D-
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesF
FutureC-
Quarterback settled, Beck in the fold, and a D- for the Giants. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Giants, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
They have staked the next five years on Carson Beck, which is the only story that really matters here. The Gadsden II reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. However the rest shakes out, Umanmielen at that price is a win they earned.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Carson Beck
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick21
Rnd1
Benjamin Morrison
In the 21st pick they get a lockdown presence outside, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Pick22
Rnd1
Kelvin Banks Jr.
In pick 22 they get a cornerstone up front at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick40
Rnd2
Tre Harris
Tre Harris in pick No. 40 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick43
Rnd2
Howard Cross III
They paid sticker price for Howard Cross III in the 43rd overall pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick53
Rnd2
Landon Jackson
Landon Jackson at No. 53 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick70
Rnd3
Luke Lachey
Nice patience on Luke Lachey, who had no business lasting to slot 70. The roster fit checks out.
Pick71
Rnd3
Princely Umanmielen
Princely Umanmielen at the Round 3 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick72
Rnd3
Barion Brown
They read the board right and Barion Brown was the payoff at the 72nd pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick73
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
A quiet steal in pick 73: Tate Ratledge for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick80
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman in No. 80 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick81
Rnd3
Ajani Cornelius
They robbed the room for Ajani Cornelius here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick104
Rnd4
Josh Conerly Jr.
Taking Josh Conerly Jr. in slot 104 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick105
Rnd4
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba at pick No. 105 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick106
Rnd4
Tory Horton
You do not let a wide receiver like Tory Horton reach the Round 4 slot and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick134
Rnd5
Nicholas Singleton
Circle this one: Nicholas Singleton at the 134th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick136
Rnd5
Riley Leonard
Somehow Riley Leonard was still sitting there in the 136th overall pick, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick139
Rnd5
Nick Emmanwori
A safety of that caliber at slot 139 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick168
Rnd6
David Bailey
They will replay David Bailey at pick No. 168 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick177
Rnd6
Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith in the 177th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick198
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
Value with a capital V on Xavier Truss in the Round 7 slot, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick200
Rnd7
Oronde Gadsden II
Value said wait; Oronde Gadsden II in pick 200 says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick219
Rnd7
Roman Hemby
Roman Hemby slid further than he should have, and Round 7, Pick 27 is lovely value for the running back. It fills a real need, too.
