Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B-

Good, not great, for the Steelers: B-.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Steelers took Will Shipley at slot 84, roughly 24 spots before his name belonged.

The Zinter pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots still on the board. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Graham Barton
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line. Need was not the driver here.
Pick51 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at slot 51 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick84 Rnd3 Will Shipley
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Will Shipley well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick99 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots still to address, they spent the 99th pick on Zak Zinter, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick120 Rnd4 Matt Goncalves
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Matt Goncalves adds an offensive lineman and leaves interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots untouched.
Pick121 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
A premium they did not need to pay, Ben Sinnott a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick159 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
No drama and no debate, Luke McCaffrey went about where he belonged in pick 159. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick197 Rnd6 Nick Gargiulo
They took Nick Gargiulo at par in the 197th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick238 Rnd7 Carter Bradley
Carter Bradley at the 238th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
