Draft Grade — Vikings
Overall D+
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesF FutureA+
A passer of the future in McCarthy, and a D+, for the Vikings.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Vikings did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Too much went sideways, and the D+ is the honest tally.

J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Reaching for Hall left real value on the table behind him. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

They banked enough surplus on Johnson to cover a lot of smaller sins.

A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In the 11th overall pick they get a building block for the line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick28 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In pick No. 28 they get a passer to set the clock by, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick59 Rnd2 Xavier Worthy
A reasonable price with a little left over, Xavier Worthy in the 59th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick60 Rnd2 Bralen Trice
They liked Bralen Trice enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 2, Pick 28. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick109 Rnd4 Cam Hart
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cam Hart at No. 109. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick156 Rnd5 Roger Rosengarten
Value with a capital V on Roger Rosengarten in pick 156, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick166 Rnd5 Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha in the Round 5 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick185 Rnd6 Gabe Hall
They talked themselves into Gabe Hall at slot 185, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick190 Rnd6 Drake Nugent
Drake Nugent at pick No. 190 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick205 Rnd6 Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson at No. 205 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
