Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D-
ValueC NeedB- TradesF FutureA-
McCarthy is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: D-.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Bears reached some 37 spots for J.J. McCarthy, and value like that does not grow back. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

They banked enough surplus on Baker to cover a lot of smaller sins.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick3 Rnd1 Marvin Harrison Jr.
In pick No. 3 they get a true top target at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In the 9th overall pick they get their quarterback of the future, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Pick20 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, reach and all.
Pick34 Rnd2 Tyler Nubin
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Nubin at slot 34, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick75 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at No. 75 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick104 Rnd4 McKinnley Jackson
This one needs a full-page explanation: McKinnley Jackson in the Round 4 slot, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick111 Rnd4 Javon Baker
A quiet steal in the 111th overall pick: Javon Baker for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
Pick123 Rnd4 Javon Foster
No drama and no debate, Javon Foster went about where he belonged in slot 123. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick143 Rnd5 Braiden McGregor
Braiden McGregor at Round 5, Pick 7 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
