Overall B-

A solid, sensible weekend for the Colts: B-.

The curious call sets the tone. With quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots still glaring, the Colts used the Round 4 slot on D'Angelo Ponds, a cornerback they were not exactly short of.

Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Rodriguez has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Ponds.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick47 Rnd2 Chris Johnson
Chris Johnson slid further than he should have, and pick No. 47 is lovely value for the cornerback. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick78 Rnd3 Jacob Rodriguez
They went early on Jacob Rodriguez in Round 3, Pick 14, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick113 Rnd4 D'Angelo Ponds
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with D'Angelo Ponds while clear needs at quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots sat open.
Pick154 Rnd5 Chase Roberts
Chase Roberts at the 154th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick216 Rnd6 Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona at pick 216 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick230 Rnd7 Shamar Easter
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Shamar Easter. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick253 Rnd7 Trey Holly
They let Trey Holly come to them and pounced at pick No. 253. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
