Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall F
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureD+
A weekend the 49ers spent fighting the board, and losing. F.

The 49ers went off the board in a big way for Patrick Payton, 47 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Sabb pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at running back and quarterback.

However the rest shakes out, Slaughter at that price is a win they earned. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Carnell Tate
In No. 32 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick56 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
Somehow Jake Slaughter was still sitting there in Round 2, Pick 24, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick57 Rnd2 Jaeden Roberts
They reached a country mile for Jaeden Roberts at the 57th pick, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick60 Rnd2 Cashius Howell
Cashius Howell at pick 60 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick70 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Michael Taaffe in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick76 Rnd3 Gabe Jacas
Gabe Jacas at the 76th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick89 Rnd3 Monroe Freeling
A premium they did not need to pay, Monroe Freeling a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick92 Rnd3 Jack Endries
A conviction pick on Jack Endries at pick 92 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick96 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
The board had Malachi Fields higher than Round 3, Pick 32, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick103 Rnd4 Keon Sabb
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Keon Sabb while clear needs at running back and quarterback sat open.
Pick120 Rnd4 Will Lee III
Value with a capital V on Will Lee III in the 120th overall pick, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick128 Rnd4 Earnest Greene III
Earnest Greene III at pick No. 128 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick129 Rnd4 Austin Romaine
Austin Romaine at the 129th pick is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick134 Rnd4 Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton in slot 134 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick137 Rnd4 Lee Hunter
A wild overpay on Lee Hunter in the 137th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick148 Rnd5 Evan Stewart
A wide receiver of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 10 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick167 Rnd5 Tristan Leigh
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tristan Leigh well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick174 Rnd5 Khalil Barnes
By-the-book stuff, Khalil Barnes at No. 174 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick206 Rnd6 Dominic Zvada
Dominic Zvada in pick 206 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick214 Rnd6 Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander at slot 214 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick241 Rnd7 Jordan Hall
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jordan Hall in the Round 7 slot, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
