The 49ers did not so much draft Patrick Payton as overpay for him, 47 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

However the rest shakes out, Beck at that price is a win they earned. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.

The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
