The phones were a trap the 49ers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. Put together, it is a D-.

If Carter Jr. pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Echoles at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
