Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB- NeedA- TradesB- FutureB-
The Patriots kept it disciplined and banked a B.

You can draft well and still miss the point. The Patriots did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to interior defensive lineman, which was the need that mattered most. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

Getting Harris where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Trapilo pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Abdul Carter
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Nic Scourton
Nic Scourton in slot 38 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick69 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
They liked Ozzy Trapilo enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 69. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick77 Rnd3 Tre Harris
A slide stopped in the 77th overall pick, with Tre Harris worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick106 Rnd4 Zy Alexander
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zy Alexander. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick144 Rnd5 Brashard Smith
Good price on Brashard Smith in the 144th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick171 Rnd5 Ben Sauls
A straight-up fair deal on Ben Sauls at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick220 Rnd7 Jay Higgins
Value with a capital V on Jay Higgins in pick 220, a genuine coup. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick238 Rnd7 Dante Trader Jr.
Dante Trader Jr. at the 238th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
