The phones sank the Browns this weekend: D. The rest of the league had time to spare on Malik Hartford; the Browns did not wait, grabbing him 77 spots ahead at the 144th pick. Put together, it is a D.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Jermod McCoy
In No. 17 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick19
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
In pick No. 19 they get a home-run threat at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick22
Rnd1
Cashius Howell
The board had cheaper options than Cashius Howell at the Round 1 slot, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick29
Rnd1
Jake Slaughter
In pick 29 they get a long-term starter on the line, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
Pick34
Rnd2
Arch Manning
A straight-up fair deal on Arch Manning at Round 2, Pick 2, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick38
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
They paid up for Sonny Styles at the 38th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick56
Rnd2
Trevor Goosby
Trevor Goosby in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick69
Rnd3
Darrell Jackson Jr.
Darrell Jackson Jr. in pick 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick95
Rnd3
Austin Romaine
A wild overpay on Austin Romaine in the 95th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick104
Rnd4
Monroe Freeling
They liked Monroe Freeling enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 4, Pick 4. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick105
Rnd4
CJ Baxter
They reached into another round for CJ Baxter, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick122
Rnd4
DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell in the 122nd overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick131
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at slot 131 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick143
Rnd5
Monroe Mills
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Monroe Mills well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick144
Rnd5
Malik Hartford
They left a pile of value on the table to take Malik Hartford this early at the 144th overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick148
Rnd5
Tanner Koziol
They went early on Tanner Koziol in pick No. 148, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick186
Rnd6
Taylen Green
Good price on Taylen Green in pick 186, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
