Draft Grade — Bears
Overall A-
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureA
The Bears won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: A-.

The real work happened on the phones. The Bears fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.

It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Powers-Johnson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

In the end it comes back to Rome Odunze, and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value.
Pick12 Rnd1 Jared Verse
Jared Verse at the 12th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick32 Rnd1 Tyler Nubin
In No. 32 they get a ballhawk on the back end. More want than need.
Pick35 Rnd2 Jackson Powers-Johnson
They jumped the gun on Jackson Powers-Johnson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick76 Rnd3 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at the 76th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick87 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in pick No. 87, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick95 Rnd3 Maason Smith
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went DT-EDGE with Maason Smith while clear needs at interior defensive lineman and quarterback sat open.
Pick111 Rnd4 Max Melton
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Max Melton. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick123 Rnd4 Isaiah Adams
Isaiah Adams in Round 4, Pick 23 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick127 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at the 127th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick143 Rnd5 Braelon Allen
A reach on Braelon Allen in slot 143; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick204 Rnd6 Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley in pick 204 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick244 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
By-the-book stuff, Joshua Cephus at pick No. 244 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
