Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
B
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Panthers fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B. Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Panthers came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. The bottom line is a respectable B.
Reaching for Davis left real value on the table behind him. Spending an early pick on OLB-EDGE with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick42
Rnd2
Byron Murphy II
Byron Murphy II at pick No. 42 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick65
Rnd3
Ricky Pearsall
They paid a round early for Ricky Pearsall in the 65th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick76
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cooper Beebe. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick100
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
They paid sticker price for Dominick Puni in pick 100, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick102
Rnd4
Kris Abrams-Draine
A reach for Kris Abrams-Draine in slot 102; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick104
Rnd4
Javon Solomon
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent No. 104 on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick107
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
A reach on Darius Robinson in Round 4, Pick 7; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick111
Rnd4
James Williams
They talked themselves into James Williams at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick115
Rnd4
Javon Foster
They jumped the gun on Javon Foster, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick120
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
A real head-scratcher, Ben Sinnott in pick 120 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick123
Rnd4
Malik Washington
Malik Washington at slot 123 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick152
Rnd5
Isaiah Davis
Isaiah Davis in the 152nd pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick162
Rnd5
Delmar Glaze
No drama and no debate, Delmar Glaze went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 26. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick166
Rnd5
Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett at pick No. 166 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick202
Rnd6
Isaiah Neyor
A premium they did not need to pay, Isaiah Neyor a notch or two before his time. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
