Draft Grade — Steelers

The Steelers cashed the board's mistake on Hadden: C+.

You could see the war room lean forward. Kamal Hadden at No. 195 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.

Spending an early pick on offensive lineman with quarterback, safety and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The cost of the Van Pran reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
In pick 20 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick51 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
A curious use of the Round 2 slot. Quarterback, safety and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Sedrick Van Pran did not.
Pick84 Rnd3 Malik Washington
A premium they did not need to pay, Malik Washington a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick98 Rnd3 Maason Smith
Maason Smith at slot 98 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick119 Rnd4 Elijah Jones
Nothing to complain about; Elijah Jones went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick178 Rnd6 Curtis Jacobs
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Curtis Jacobs. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick195 Rnd6 Kamal Hadden
Steal is underselling it; Kamal Hadden at pick No. 195 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
