FutureF
Daniels is the Patriots' new face under center. Grade: F. There is reaching, and then there is Jeremy Moussa at pick No. 214. The Patriots jumped the board by 270 and dared it to prove them wrong.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They will answer for taking cornerback early while edge rusher and interior defensive lineman went begging.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left edge rusher open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
Malik Nabers at pick 3 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick9
Rnd1
Jayden Daniels
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jayden Daniels. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick34
Rnd2
Terrion Arnold
Fair-plus on Terrion Arnold, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick35
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders is a better player than pick No. 35 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick41
Rnd2
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at Round 2, Pick 9 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
Pick45
Rnd2
Keon Coleman
A clean, defensible pick in No. 45 with a little surplus value in Keon Coleman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick46
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
They paid a round early for Jonathon Brooks in pick No. 46, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick67
Rnd3
D.J. James
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. D.J. James in No. 67 leaves edge rusher and interior defensive lineman for later.
Pick102
Rnd4
Cade Stover
Value said wait; Cade Stover in slot 102 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
Pick104
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
A quiet steal in the 104th overall pick: Zak Zinter for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick139
Rnd5
Oronde Gadsden II
This one needs a full-page explanation: Oronde Gadsden II in the Round 5 slot, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick180
Rnd6
Hayden Hatten
A big swing on Hayden Hatten at the 180th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick191
Rnd6
Jordan Toles
Jordan Toles at pick 191 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick206
Rnd6
Jacob Dobbs
A wild overpay on Jacob Dobbs in Round 6, Pick 31, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jeremy Moussa
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jeremy Moussa. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick216
Rnd6
Christian Jones
A real head-scratcher, Christian Jones in the 216th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick218
Rnd6
Jeremiah Walker
They reached into another round for Jeremiah Walker, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick221
Rnd7
Evan Williams
They talked themselves into Evan Williams at No. 221, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick256
Rnd7
Keilan Robinson
Keilan Robinson at Round 7, Pick 36 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
