Desmond Ridder DRAFTING FOR THEFalcons

Draft Grade — Falcons
Overall
B
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Falcons, and a B to prove it. The Matthew Jones pick is the one that will follow the Falcons into the fall. They took him 39 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
They paid sticker price for T'Vondre Sweat in the 43rd pick, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick54
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
T.J. Tampa in slot 54 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick79
Rnd3
Brandon Dorlus
Brandon Dorlus at Round 3, Pick 15 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick111
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
Nothing to complain about; Matt Goncalves went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick148
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in the 148th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick185
Rnd6
Tykee Smith
Somehow Tykee Smith was still sitting there in pick 185, and they pounced on premier safety value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick197
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III at No. 197 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick210
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
They liked Frank Gore Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in the 210th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick223
Rnd7
Ryan Flournoy
They barely believed it either: Ryan Flournoy still on the board at pick No. 223. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick229
Rnd7
Matthew Jones
They talked themselves into Matthew Jones at Round 7, Pick 9, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
