FutureC-
The Raiders overdrafted Freeling and paid the price. Grade: F. Nobody else had Monroe Freeling anywhere near pick No. 59. The Raiders did, by 49 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A F, plain and simple.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. With edge rusher and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Ponds value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In Round 1, Pick 10 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value. More want than need.
Pick19
Rnd1
Jordyn Tyson
In pick No. 19 they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick28
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
Avieon Terrell is a better player than pick 28 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick33
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
A surprising call. With edge rusher and tight end still to address, they spent the Round 2 slot on Sonny Styles, a linebacker they were not short of.
Pick36
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
A straight-up fair deal on Emmanuel Pregnon at the 36th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick38
Rnd2
Christen Miller
Christen Miller at the 38th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick59
Rnd2
Monroe Freeling
They left a pile of value on the table to take Monroe Freeling this early at the 59th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick102
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
They paid a round early for Trinidad Chambliss in No. 102, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
Pick103
Rnd4
Demond Claiborne
Value said wait; Demond Claiborne in the 103rd pick says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick117
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
They read the board right and D'Angelo Ponds was the payoff at the Round 4 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick134
Rnd4
Skyler Gill-Howard
By-the-book stuff, Skyler Gill-Howard at pick No. 134 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick174
Rnd5
Trey Zuhn III
They reached into another round for Trey Zuhn III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick180
Rnd6
Bud Clark
No edge and no loss on Bud Clark in pick 180; it is a wash and a sensible one. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick183
Rnd6
Antonio Kite
They paid sticker price for Antonio Kite in slot 183, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick219
Rnd7
Joey Aguilar
No drama and no debate, Joey Aguilar went about where he belonged in No. 219. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
