Bob Lamb DRAFTING FOR THECardinals
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall
D
ValueF
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A passer of the future in Mordecai, and a D, for the Cardinals. Boards are made to be trusted, and the Cardinals shredded theirs for Tanner Mordecai. He came off 342 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Johnson. Everything downstream of Tanner Mordecai depends on Tanner Mordecai, and the building knows it.
The Ugwoegbu pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with offensive lineman, tight end and other spots still on the board. The offensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Tanner Mordecai
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick27
Rnd1
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
In pick No. 27 they get a problem off the edge, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
David Ugwoegbu
They zigged when the board said zag, taking David Ugwoegbu at OLB-EDGE with offensive lineman, tight end and other spots open.
Pick66
Rnd3
Kedon Slovis
A wild overpay on Kedon Slovis in pick 66, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick71
Rnd3
Austin Reed
Austin Reed at the 71st overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick90
Rnd3
Miyan Williams
This one needs a full-page explanation: Miyan Williams in Round 3, Pick 27, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick104
Rnd4
Solomon Byrd
They talked themselves into Solomon Byrd at slot 104, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick138
Rnd5
Jaylen Harrell
A real head-scratcher, Jaylen Harrell in Round 5, Pick 2 is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick162
Rnd5
Jordan Strachan
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jordan Strachan. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick186
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
They reached into another round for Nathaniel Watson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick226
Rnd7
Cornelius Johnson
A wide receiver of that caliber at the Round 7 slot is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
