Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB- TradesA+ FutureB-
Nobody dealt better than the 49ers this weekend: B+.

Boards are made to be trusted, and the 49ers shredded theirs for Cooper Mays. He came off 67 spots early, and the room will hear about it. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.

Getting Taylor where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.

With running back, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick15 Rnd1 Will Johnson
In pick No. 15 they get a potential shutdown corner, and a steal at that.
Pick43 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks slipping to the 43rd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick46 Rnd2 Jonah Savaiinaea
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jonah Savaiinaea. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick75 Rnd3 Benjamin Morrison
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Benjamin Morrison adds a cornerback and leaves running back, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Pick100 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick113 Rnd4 Mason Taylor
A tight end of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 11 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick138 Rnd4 Joshua Farmer
The board fumbled Joshua Farmer all the way to pick 138, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick147 Rnd5 Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton is a better player than No. 147 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick187 Rnd6 Oronde Gadsden II
A tidy little value on Oronde Gadsden II in slot 187, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick226 Rnd7 Teddye Buchanan
They went early on Teddye Buchanan in pick No. 226, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick230 Rnd7 Cooper Mays
A big swing on Cooper Mays at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick242 Rnd7 Thor Griffith
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Thor Griffith. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249 Rnd7 Isaac TeSlaa
Somehow Isaac TeSlaa was still sitting there in the 249th pick, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick252 Rnd7 Francisco Mauigoa
A wild overpay on Francisco Mauigoa in Round 7, Pick 36, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
