Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB- TradesF FutureA
The Bears bet the future on Williams. The board says D.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Bears did exactly that with Javon Baker in the Round 4 slot.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Everything downstream of Caleb Williams depends on Caleb Williams, and the building knows it.

Spending an early pick on safety with interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The Washington pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In Round 1, Pick 1 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Pick34 Rnd2 Ladd McConkey
No edge and no loss on Ladd McConkey in slot 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick39 Rnd2 Kamren Kinchens
Kamren Kinchens at pick No. 39 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick47 Rnd2 Kris Jenkins
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kris Jenkins. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick68 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
This one needs a full-page explanation: Sedrick Van Pran in pick 68, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick75 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Brenden Rice. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick107 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
A quiet steal in the 107th pick: Zak Zinter for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick110 Rnd4 Tykee Smith
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 110 on Tykee Smith with interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots unsolved.
Pick122 Rnd4 Javon Baker
Javon Baker at pick No. 122 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick146 Rnd5 Malik Washington
They robbed the room for Malik Washington here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
