Draft Grade — Seahawks
Overall
F
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureD-
The Seahawks left with their quarterback, and a F to match. The phones were a trap the Seahawks kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
Whatever Bo Nix becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The cost of the Gilbert reach is exactly the players who went right after him. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Seahawks had louder needs to answer first.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left running back open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Laiatu Latu
In the 8th overall pick they get a double-digit-sack hope. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick16
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In slot 16 they get juice off the edge at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick20
Rnd1
Bo Nix
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
Nothing to complain about; JT Tuimoloau went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick52
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
They paid sticker price for T'Vondre Sweat in pick 52, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick57
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
They took Jackson Powers-Johnson at par in the 57th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick74
Rnd3
Jermaine Burton
A tidy bit of business in Round 3, Pick 10, where Jermaine Burton graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick78
Rnd3
D.J. James
D.J. James in No. 78 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick81
Rnd3
Maason Smith
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves running back untouched.
Pick84
Rnd3
Marshawn Kneeland
A wild overpay on Marshawn Kneeland in Round 3, Pick 20, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
Tykee Smith
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tykee Smith. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick98
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
They liked Cooper Beebe enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 98. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick118
Rnd4
Junior Colson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Junior Colson in the Round 4 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick120
Rnd4
Cade Stover
A surprising call. With running back still to address, they spent pick 120 on Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick154
Rnd5
Jordan Travis
Jordan Travis slipping to pick No. 154 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick194
Rnd6
Christian Jones
A slide stopped in slot 194, with Christian Jones worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick236
Rnd7
Arik Gilbert
Arik Gilbert in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
