FutureC
The Seahawks drew a line under the quarterback search with Nix: F. The war room fell hard for Mason Fairchild, and it showed at the 218th overall pick: 85 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. So much rides on Bo Nix that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.
The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with running back and interior defensive lineman still on the board. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring. The Trice steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
There is no spinning it; the board won this weekend going away.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Bo Nix
Bo Nix in Round 1, Pick 20 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick28
Rnd1
JT Tuimoloau
In pick 28 they get a problem off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Bralen Trice
Bralen Trice is a better player than No. 38 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick52
Rnd2
Calen Bullock
By-the-book stuff, Calen Bullock at pick No. 52 squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick60
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in slot 60, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick73
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
No edge and no loss on Christian Haynes in the 73rd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick78
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A curious use of pick 78. Running back and interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Pick79
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
A reach for Christian Mahogany in the 79th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick84
Rnd3
Rod Moore
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 84 on Rod Moore with running back and interior defensive lineman unsolved.
Pick87
Rnd3
Marshawn Kneeland
They reached a country mile for Marshawn Kneeland at pick No. 87, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick109
Rnd4
Cade Stover
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 9: Cade Stover adds a TE-EDGE while running back and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Pick116
Rnd4
Drake Nugent
This one needs a full-page explanation: Drake Nugent in the 116th pick, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick118
Rnd4
Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick122
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson at No. 122 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick131
Rnd4
Javon Foster
They paid sticker price for Javon Foster in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick154
Rnd5
Darius Robinson
A straight-up fair deal on Darius Robinson at pick No. 154, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick159
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III at pick 159 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jaylan Ford
A tidy bit of business in slot 160, where Jaylan Ford graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick177
Rnd6
Christian Jones
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Jones. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick194
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
A big swing on Dwight McGlothern at No. 194, well ahead of any board in the building. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick201
Rnd6
Khordae Sydnor
Khordae Sydnor at the 201st overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick206
Rnd6
J.J. Weaver
They paid up for J.J. Weaver at Round 6, Pick 31 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
They reached into another round for Jared Wiley, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick216
Rnd6
Demani Richardson
Demani Richardson in the 216th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick218
Rnd6
Mason Fairchild
Mason Fairchild at the 218th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick236
Rnd7
Willie Lampkin
They talked themselves into Willie Lampkin at No. 236, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249
Rnd7
Hayden Hatten
Hayden Hatten in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
