FutureB-
Nobody dealt better than the Chargers this weekend: B+. Nobody else had Braylan Shelby anywhere near the Round 6 slot. The Chargers did, by 42 spots, and that gap is the whole story. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
Echoles falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The veteran additions, Justin Jefferson chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick42
Rnd2
Chris Peal
Chris Peal at pick No. 42 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick55
Rnd2
Will Echoles
Will Echoles in Round 2, Pick 23 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick69
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Samson Okunlola. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick75
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
They will replay A'Mauri Washington at pick 75 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick80
Rnd3
Anthony Smith
A reach for Anthony Smith in slot 80; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick86
Rnd3
Luke Montgomery
Luke Montgomery at the 86th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick92
Rnd3
Faletau Satuala
Faletau Satuala at the 92nd pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick97
Rnd3
Jayden Maiava
By-the-book stuff, Jayden Maiava at the 97th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick106
Rnd4
Kade Pieper
Kade Pieper slipping to slot 106 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick123
Rnd4
Brandon Inniss
They paid sticker price for Brandon Inniss in Round 4, Pick 23, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick128
Rnd4
J'Koby Williams
A tidy little value on J'Koby Williams in No. 128, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick154
Rnd5
Mateen Ibirogba
Mateen Ibirogba at pick No. 154 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick165
Rnd5
Drew Bobo
A quiet steal in the Round 5 slot: Drew Bobo for less than the market said. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick173
Rnd5
Benjamin Brahmer
Benjamin Brahmer at pick 173 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
Pick202
Rnd6
Braylan Shelby
Braylan Shelby at pick No. 202 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick227
Rnd7
Jay'Vion Cole
Jay'Vion Cole is a better player than the 227th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick233
Rnd7
Addison Nichols
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Addison Nichols. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick243
Rnd7
D'Antre Robinson
A premium they did not need to pay, D'Antre Robinson a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick244
Rnd7
Smith Snowden
A slide stopped in Round 7, Pick 28, with Smith Snowden worth more than the price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick245
Rnd7
DJ Vonnahme
A reach on DJ Vonnahme in pick 245; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
