Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB NeedA- TradesB- FutureB-
The Patriots won the night they stopped Graham from sliding. Grade: B.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Myles Graham slide 60 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. No fireworks, but a solid B.

For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Reaching for Mandell left real value on the table behind him. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Yhonzae Pierre
In pick No. 13 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick44 Rnd2 KJ Bolden
You do not let a safety like KJ Bolden reach the 44th overall pick and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75 Rnd3 A'Mauri Washington
They barely believed it either: A'Mauri Washington still on the board at Round 3, Pick 11. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick112 Rnd4 Mike Matthews
Mike Matthews in pick 112 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick160 Rnd5 Walker Lyons
They did well to land Walker Lyons in No. 160, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick182 Rnd6 Myles Graham
Myles Graham in the 182nd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick195 Rnd6 Kam Franklin
They took Kam Franklin at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick212 Rnd6 Emerson Mandell
A reach for Emerson Mandell in slot 212; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick250 Rnd7 LJ McCray
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and LJ McCray at No. 250 is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick257 Rnd7 D'Antre Robinson
D'Antre Robinson at the 257th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
