Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB+ TradesC- FutureA
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Patriots a B.

Nobody else had Ajani Cornelius anywhere near pick No. 144. The Patriots did, by 30 spots, and that gap is the whole story. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Tetairoa McMillan
In slot 14 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Mykel Williams
Mykel Williams at pick 38 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick45 Rnd2 Colston Loveland
The board fumbled Colston Loveland all the way to Round 2, Pick 13, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
Pick69 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at No. 69 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick77 Rnd3 Dylan Sampson
Dylan Sampson slipping to the 77th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick106 Rnd4 Andrew Mukuba
Taking Andrew Mukuba in the 106th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick144 Rnd5 Ajani Cornelius
A real head-scratcher, Ajani Cornelius in the 144th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick217 Rnd7 Carson Vinson
Carson Vinson at No. 217 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick220 Rnd7 Karene Reid
A quiet steal in the Round 7 slot: Karene Reid for less than the market said. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick238 Rnd7 Teddye Buchanan
A reach on Teddye Buchanan in pick 238; the board had better options right there. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
